Usage Of Gauze Swabs
To apply the swab, ensure the wound is cleaned thoroughly to remove any debris or foreign bodies. Ensure the shape and size of the swab is applicable to the size of the wound that is being treated. The swab can be placed directly onto the wound, as it is not adhesive and sterile.
The swab is simply held in place over the wound, allowing it to soak up all the discharge secreted by the wound. If the swab is used to clean the wound, a small volume of disinfectant can be added onto the swab, and the wound can be gently dabbed. Once the swab is saturated, or the wound has stopped discharging fluid(s), the swab can be removed and disposed of. Take care not to touch the wound, as this may aggravate it. Changing the swab frequently is recommended. If the swab gets saturated or soiled, it should be replaced immediately with a fresh swab.
It is imperative that gauze swabs are not used if the packaging or seal is compromised. Evidence of this may suggest tampering or loss of sterility. If one should come across swabs inside compromised packaging, the correct course of action is to dispose of it quickly and safely.
Chatrapatti Cotton Healing Product Precautions
- It is important that gauze swabs are not reused. Once used, the device is not fit to be salvaged for further used, as sterilization cannot be retained. Re-using swabs can result in infections being transmitted.
- Must prepare the swabs for use in a clean, sterile environment, absent of bodily fluids or other sources of contamination.
- Gauze swabs are more suitable to treat relatively minor cuts and lesions. If a wound is more severe, or is bleeding, a stronger, more robust medical device should be used, for example an adhesive bandage, also offered by Sree Arumugham Surgicals.
- Gauze swabs should be stored in a clean, dry location that is well ventilated, and not overly humid or hot. Failure to do so may interfere with the swabs absorption and cleaning properties.
- Promptly and safely dispose of any swabs that have touched a potentially contaminated surface;
- If gauze swabs are being used in a surgical operation, sterile, x-ray detectable swabs should be used;
- Swabs have an expiration date. If the swabs are out of date, they should not be used for applications that require a Gauze swab. They can only be used for non-sterile applications;
- If swabs have blood or any other bodily substance on it, it must be handled as biohazard waste.
